KEY WORDS AND VOCABULARY:EARLY CIVILISATIONS

KEY WORDS
 
Civilisation: ideas, sciences, arts, customs, beliefs, etc., that characterise a human group, such as people or nation.
 
Mesopotamia: historical region in Asia, In Greek the name means "land between two rivers".
 
 
Egypt: historical civilisation in Africa, located in a large desert crossed from north to south by the long river Nile.
 Kingdom: territory ruled by a King or Queen.
 
City state: city and surrounding lands, with its own independent system of political organisation.
 
Divination: finding out about the future by interpreting signs.
 
Ziggurats: very high buildings, with tiered towers, connected by stairs. At the top, there was an astronomical observatory.

Dynasty: series of rulers from the same family.

Craftwork: technique of making objects and products by hand, using simple tools and traditional methods.

Polytheist: someone who believes in various gods.

Mummify: prepare dead bodies so that they are preserved and do not decompose.

Sphinx: mythical animal, generally with a human head, neck and chest, but a lion´s body and legs.

Mastabas: type of egyptian tomb, used to bury pharaohs and important public servants. They were built in the form of a flat-topped pyramid and contained an offerings chamber with a statue of the dead.


Pyramids: type of egyptian tomb, formed a labyrinth of romos and passageways, the body was surrounded by treasure. Examples: pyramids of Cheops, Khafre and Menkaure.

Hypogea: underground tombs carved out the rock, with various passageways leading to the funerary chamber of pharaoh.


Temple: religious egyptian buildings dedicated to the gods, where the priests lived. Example: Temple of Luxor.



Rock Temples: temples carved out of rock. Example: Temple of Abu Simbel.

KEY WORDS AND VOCABULARY METAL AGE

KEY WORDS

Metal Age: Period in history that lasted from around 3500 B.C TO 750 B.C and includes the Copper Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Metallurgy: Technique for extracting metals from rock or earth and their treatment and use.

Metalworking: -Extract the ore.
                         -Smelt the metal in a furnace.
                         - Remove the slag.
                         - Pour the metal into the mould.


Menhirs: Large stones pushed into the ground, forming a circle (cromlech) or a line (alignment).



Dolmens: Made from several vertical stone walls and a horizontal stone.

KEY WORDS AND VOCABULARY STONE AGE

KEY WORDS


Hominids: The upper primates who walked upright and all their descendants, incluiding human beings.

Prehistory: Long period of time that began with the appearance of the first human beings and ended with the discovery of the written word.


Palaeolithic Age: "old stone" Prehistoric era of around 5 millions years ago until 7000 B.C.
Neolithic Age: "new stone" Prehistoric era from approximately 7000 B.C. to 3500 B.C.
Nomad: A member of a tribe that has not permanent settlement, in the Paleolithic Age when resources ran out in one place, they moved to another to find food.

Sedentary: In the Neolithic Age people became sedentary, they lived in permanent settlements because they became producers.

Division of labour: A kind of organisation where people did differents activities or jobs: agriculture, livestock, hunting, fishing, building, basket-making, cloth-making, defence, etc.

Bartering: The exchange of products among differents groups, it appeared in the Neolithic Age.
